Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of Seymour, a timid and nerdy sales clerk at the seedy Mushnik's Skid Row Florists, barely in business in lower Manhattan. He achieves fame and fortune after he discovers an exotic plant named Audrey II, a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination! A Greek chorus of hip soul singers narrates the thriller with a score in the 1960s style of rock and roll, doo-wop, and Motown. Audrey's appetite grows to gigantic proportions as the cast rapidly diminishes.
Can't get to Miller Outdoor Theatre to see this show? Purchase the 1986 cult classic movie version of Little Shop of Horrors, featuring Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, and Ellen Greene. Bill Murray even makes a character appearance.
And while you're at it, why not stop by the Houston Museum of Natural Science to see Audrey II's friend, Lois the Corpse Flower, as she blooms. Can't get to the museum to see Lois? Check her out as she blooms on the museum's webcam.

According to the Houston Museum of Natural Science's website:

The "Corpse Flower" (Amorphophallus titanum) gets its name from the pungent stench it emits in bloom - this, combined with the flower's huge size and deep purple color, convinced the first explorers who encountered it in Sumatra to believe it was a man-eating plant! Since then, this extremely rare plant has gained celebrity status by having one of the largest, rarest, and smelliest flowers in the world. These flowers can reach heights of 7-10 ft and a diameter of 5-6 ft.
Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07200534841887755282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9213234395548728754.post-50497745551146758372010-01-26T15:00:00.008-06:002010-03-26T22:09:01.586-05:00Rent, at Country Playhouse, Jan. 8-30

Country Playhouse is proud to present the Broadway Mega-Blockbuster, RENT, in January 2010. RENT is Jonathan Larson's groundbreaking rock musical that took Broadway by storm and put actors like Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, and Adam Pascal on a path to stardom.

Based on Puccini's La Boheme - an opera about Parisian intectuals living, loving, and partying amongst those afflicted with consumption - RENT updates the story to present a group of artists and intellectuals living in late 20th century lower Manhattan, facing the AIDS crisis.

The characters find strength in each other as they come to terms with the careless, upwardly mobile society that led to such a broken world.
Dr. Cristow is at the center of the trouble: Henrietta, his mistress; Veronica, his ex mistress; and Gerda, his wife are all visiting at The Hollow - within five minutes Cristow is dead. Cast and crew from her first, and only stage play performance are gathered together a year after her death under the pretext of a reading of his new play. "Unusual form, a mystery," Alex notes, "You take the audience by the hand, and you lead them in the wrong direction. They trust you, and you betray them! All in the name of surprise."

As the scenes are read, it becomes evident that Alex has an ulterior motive in inviting these people for this "rehearsal." When the group learns that Alex believes Monica was actually murdered, and that one of them is the prime suspect, it is only through various methods of duress that they reluctantly go along with his scheme. Each character is introduced, playing what seems to be a stock part: the ingénue yearning for stardom; the producer keeping his eye on the bottom line; the stage director trying to make a name for himself; the embittered ex-lover; the leading man with an eye for the ladies, and so on.

The tension grows as the clues are laid out piece by piece and reaches the boiling point with surprising revelations, countered by others even more surprising. The dazzling, yet basically logical twists build to a climax and solution that are theatrically stunning! The authors of this thriller have all had direct Broadway experience, and their dialogue has a special sting of wit and reality.

This play was popularized in a 1982 made for TV movie starring Robert Preston, Patrick MacNee, Lynn Redgrave, and a very young Jeff Goldblum.

So bring your problem solving abilities with you and try to figure out who the murderer is in this spine-tingling whodunnit. We guarantee you'll have a great time.
Auditioning for band members ready to ROCK!
One of the great things about this show is the music. We are looking to cast our entire band with teens. Who knows how to rock better than them? If you or someone you know would like to audition for the band, please see the special auditioning times and information. If you play an instrument and would like to audition for a role too, you can do both! We will have opportunities to perform on stage as well as in the band on alternating days if cast in both areas. If you know someone who would love a chance to show off their skillz, pass this along!

Auditions:
Auditions will be set up in slots of 5. You will be asked to sing, dance, and possibly do a cold reading from the script. You do NOT have to sing, but you must sing to be considered for a principle role. We are looking for dancers as well.

You may be called back if needed later in the day.

After having written about national and international theatre for the past seven years (in various capacities, as a music journalist), I delved into writing about local theatre for another site not too long ago. In that short time I discovered so many smaller theatres in the Houston area, more than I expected, really. I realize that Houston has so much to offer, outside of the touring Broadway productions. We've got a lot of local talent, too! After growing disillusioned with the writing outlet, I decided to create a new blog where I could share all the great musical theatre opportunities I find.

I'll be covering both the larger theatres, such as TUTS and The Hobby Center, as well as smaller, local theatres and troupes. You'll be amazed at the talent that's out there!

I'm also the editor of Musical Reviewer, which I'd like to think of as a "sister" site, which deals with national and international news in musical theatre.

About The Musical Reviewer

What we do
At Musical Reviewer, you'll find the latest news in musical theatre on our blog and events calendar, as well as review pages to help you decide if a particular musical is appropriate for you and your family. We also allow visitors to leave their comments and reviews for various shows. You can also see what's playing in certain cities, and read educational articles about theatre. You can also join in our community and share your love for musicals!

Why we're here
After searching for reviews on a particular musical to help make a decision whether or not it was appropriate for my entire family, I could not find a site where people could give their reviews, thoughts, and even star ratings of theatrical productions.

As a professional writer with a passion for musical theatre, I decided to create such a site. Previously, I blogged at All About Musicals, and have moved all my blog entries over here.
Education
I have a B.A. in English, and have been singing for more than 20 years (taking voice lessons throughout my childhood). I am also a freelance writer, proofreader, and editor, and the Editor-in-Chief of Writers Remember. More information on my writing, editing, and moderating services is available below.

Professional Experience
I may not be on Broadway, but I have enjoyed musicals ever since I can remember. My mother raised me on film musicals such as West Side Story, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Oklahoma, and The Music Man, to name just a few. I was barely 5 years old when I could be heard singing Molly Brown's song:

"Belly up, belly up to the bar, boys,
better loosen your belts.
Only drink when you're all alone,
or with somebody else!"

(I didn't have a clue what those lyrics meant until much later!)

A few years later, my mom and I would drive my dad crazy with our repertoire. We'd sing through entire shows like West Side Story and Les Miserables!

Whenever we had the opportunity, we'd see stage musicals. I loved the feeling that I came over me when the lights went down, and the stage came alive with performers! Cats, Into the Woods, Les Miserables, West Side Story, Crazy for You, Guys and Dolls, The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Wicked, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Jersey Boys are just a few of the musicals I've been fortunate enough to see. Not long ago I saw Les Miserables on stage for the 4th time, this time with my husband. There are others that I've not yet seen, but I already know the songs by heart; I love buying cast recordings!

I took piano and voice lessons throughout my middle and high school years, performed in several stage shows, and planned to major in music with a vocal emphasis in college, but life took some turns. I now live the musical life vicariously. This website truly is a tremendous help in vicarious living!
